Top Rank, in association with Jesse James Leija and Mike
Battah Promotions, brought eight bouts to the Illusions Theater at the
Alamodome in San Antonio, TX this past Saturday night. There were surprises and
disappointments, perhaps the biggest being Kelly Pavlik’s defeat over Aaron
Jaco in the second round of a scheduled 10-round fight, simply because
fans clearly wanted to see the former
world middleweight champion fight longer than he did. But fans were treated to
some excellent matches regardless.

The main event and the most suspenseful fight of the night
featured featherweights Evgeny Gradovich (13-0, 7 KO’s) of Russia and Frankie
Leal (16-6-3, 10, KO’s) of Mexicali MEX. This extremely well-matched 10-round
fight was a nail-biter from the minute it began. Round 1 had Gradovich leading
the action, throwing long series of punches, often 5 or more in a row. Leal countered often, but was behind
Gradovich considerably simply in number of punches thrown. With the exception
of some well-executed combinations from Gradovich, the round was the least
eventful of the nine to follow. In Round 2 Leal was leading the action more,
but Gradovich was still relentless with his frequent series of multiple blows.
This round showed significantly more action, with Gradovich still dominating in
terms of numbers of hits, but the round ended with a counter from Leal in which
he unleashed on Gradovich and sent him reeling as the bell rang. In Round 3
referee Rafael Ramos stopped the fight briefly to give the first of several
warning to Leal, this time for a low blow that left Gradovich rounded over in
pain. The round ended with a lengthy punch-for-punch series in which the two
exchanged blows until the bell rang. By Round 4, the two men looked like Rock
‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots, going almost punch for punch, in rapid succession,
Gradovich favoring the 1-2 combination, usually several in a row. Leal received
another warning from referee Ramos, and the round ended with the two in a
brutal exchange of blows. In Round 5, exhaustion seemed to be affecting both,
not surprising considering how many punches had been thrown. Several
opportunities arose for knockouts, for both fighters, but neither was able to
bring his opponent down. Ramos called time briefly to look at Leal’s left eye, which
was cut and badly bleeding. But despite everything, the two finished the round
energetically. Round 6 continued in similar fashion, the two beating each other
equally with unbelievable stamina. Fans were growing more and more vocal,
hoping for what seemed to be an impending knockout, though nobody could have
said from whom, as both fighters were attacking and landing ferocious blows. By
Round 7, Gradovich and Leal were both bleeding so badly it was a wonder that
either could see, but they continued with the same energy, only clinching occasionally
to rest, sometimes leaning on the ropes. But they fought on.

Rounds 8 and 9 continued the same, with both fighters
miraculously avoiding going down. But in Round 10, things turned around.
Gradovich pushed Leal to the ropes where he unleashed a brutal series of blows.
The only thing that kept Leal on his feet was the ropes, but Leal finally went
down. He beat the count, but was stumbling so badly when he got to his feet
that referee Ramos stopped the fight. Leal went crumbling down again as Ramos
held him while he fell. He didn’t get back up this time but was carried from
the arena on a stretcher. Gradovich won 2:15 in Round 10 by TKO. But Leal, as
did Gradovich, showed amazing skill, stamina, and devotion to the sport. Leal
who just a year ago upset Dallas’s Roberto Marroquin found himself potentially
fighting for his life after the match had ended. He was sent to the hospital
for complications relating to the fight. As of Sunday things looked much better
for Leal and a positive prognosis is expected. May your prayers be with Leal
for a speedy recovery.

Bout Seven featured lightweights James Lester (9-8, 4 KO’s)
of Detroit, MI and a San Antonio favorite, the undefeated Ivan “Bam Bam” Najera
(7-0, 6 KO’s), who entered the ring in his trademark sombrero. Though the fight
was scheduled for 6 rounds, it fell far short of that when Najera knocked
Lester to the mat at the end of Round 1. Lester had fallen earlier in the round
and returned to his feet, but the second time he fell he landed face down and
made no attempt to get up until referee Ramos reached 10, at which point all he
managed was to lift his head. A jubilant Najera made his rounds to each corner
of the ring to wave at fans as they cheered his victory.

The sixth bout of the night featured crowd favorite Kelly “The
Ghost” Pavlik (38-2, 33 KO’s) of Youngstown, OH and Aaron Jaco (15-3, 5 KO’s)
of Sarasota, FL in the super middleweight class. The fight was scheduled to go
10 round but ended up being one of the shorter bouts of the night. Jaco seemed impressively confident as he faced
Pavlik, who has more than twice the number of wins, most by knockout. In Round
1, Pavlik led the action from the beginning, landing an effective 1-2 followed
by a low left hook to Jaco’s chin right away. Jaco countered, but another left
hook sent Jaco to one knee. He beat the count, but a jab to his face sent him
reeling back. The round ended with much less action, perhaps both thinking they
needed to conserve energy for the 10-round fight. But 45 seconds into Round 2, another left
hook from Pavlik put Jaco flat on his back. He looked understandably
disappointed as he rose to his feet, but the fight was over, with Pavlik “The
Ghost” the winner by TKO. Pavlik is looking to return in June for an ESPN 2
date and then a big fight in the fall.

Bantamweights Ramon Bayala (0-3-1) of Rio Piedras P.R. and
local favorite Adam Lopez (2-0, 1 KO) of San Antonio, TX met in the ring for
the fifth bout of the night. This fight was frustrating for fans and for Lopez
due to all the clinching and holding from Bayala, which resulted in the fight
being stopped over and over again as referee Jon Schorle broke the two apart
and warned Bayala to stop holding. Round 1 seemed pretty even, but it became
increasingly difficult for Lopez to throw punches as Bayala grabbed and held.
The action was choppy, and referee Schorle issued several warnings to Bayala in
the first round alone. Lopez finished the round nicely with a series of blows
to Bayala. In Round 2 Lopez received a warning for hitting to the back of the
head, but he didn’t get much hitting in at all, as Bayala continued holding and
grabbing, and even at times wrapping around Lopez’s head and arms. The crowd
was annoyed, one fan yelling “this isn’t wrestling!” as Bayala’s holding,
followed by warnings from Schorle, increased. Round 3 showed a little more
action. Surprisingly, Bayala knocked Lopez down, but he beat the count and
returned to his feet, only to receive two nasty punches to the head that left
him dazed. But the clinching and grabbing started again, with Lopez looking
tired from simply trying to break free and managed to land some blows. Lopez
seemed determined by Round 4 to hit as much as possible, despite having to
repeatedly break free from Bayala. The action grew so intense for a moment that
the referee stopped the fight and sent each fighter to a corner to recover. This
was the most exciting round of the bout by far, but neither managed a knockout.
All three judges scored the fight 38-36, with Lopez the winner by unanimous
decision.

This fight was action-packed from beginning to end, Zarazua
determined to protect his undefeated record and Sanchez determined to break
it. In Round 1, Sanchez showed himself
capable of victory, landing far more hits than his opponent, with a surprised
Zarazua more than once taking a battery of hits. As the bell rang to close the
round, a smiling and cocky Sanchez returned to his corner, knowing he had done well.
In Round 2 Sanchez was scolded by the referee for a low blow, and though
Zarazua did better this round, Sanchez was still dominating. In Round 3, both
were unyielding, and Zarazua, perhaps growing more concerned about defeat,
attacked aggressively, landing several blows to Sanchez’s head that made the
crowd groan. Sanchez still led in number of hits, but Zarazua’s were better
executed. The bell rang after both took beatings at the ropes. Round 4 was
difficult to watch, as the beating intensified. Both must have been drained,
but the action in the final round was non-stop. Though a knockout seemed
imminent several times for both, it never came. The result was a majority draw,
with one score of 39-37, two of 38-38. Many in attendance felt the unheralded
Sanchez won the fight including the fighter which was the cause of an argument
between the two camps in the locker room area after the fight.

Light heavyweights Edwynn Jones (1-4-1, 1 KO) of Houston, TX
and Eduardo Alicea (3-0, 2 KO’s) of Cleveland, OH went four rounds in what was
certainly the least exciting fight of the night. Round 1 began with both
fighters hesitant to take much action at all, so much so that fans could be heard
yelling “do something! Somebody hit!” Unfortunately, the crowd’s repeated
shouts for something to happen had little effect. The remaining three rounds
continued much the same: little action and a lot of moving around the ring,
with occasional but ineffective punches. All three judges scored the fight
40-36 in favor of Alicea.

Featherweights Ricardo Valencia (1-3-1) of Houston, TX and
Saul Rodriguez (4-0, 4 KO’s) of Riverside, CA were in the ring for only 19
seconds. Valencia never stood a chance as Rodriguez charged at him, maniacally
swinging as soon as the referee said “Box.” Valencia never even managed any
punches, but could only put his hands up in defense. When the fight was halted
for a barrage of punches, the referee was holding Valencia up at the ropes and
then helped him to his corner. Rodriguez won by TKO.

Super welterweights Arturo Lopez (0-2) of San Antonio, TX
and Bryant Perrella (2-0) of Lehigh Acres, FL opened the night with a
well-matched, exciting bout.

Perrella began Round 1 forcing the action and driving Lopez
to the ropes, but Lopez countered and defended well. Perrella had the height
advantage and a long reach that served him well, not to mention a mean right
body shot that he used throughout the fight. By the end of the first round,
Lopez already looked a little worse for the wear. Lopez came back stronger in
Round 2 and at one point sent Perrella reeling with a nasty jab to the face.
Perrella answered with more body shots, some of which had the crowd groaning in
response to the loud ‘thuds’ that could be heard as he landed blows. Lopez took
what must have been some debilitating blows; one body shot left him staggering
briefly. The round ended with Perrella getting Lopez’s chin with two uppercuts.
Amazingly, Lopez came back even stronger at the beginning of the third round
and got in some effective blows on a seemingly tired Perrella. Both were a
little slower this round, but Perrella found renewed energy and kept pounding
at Lopez, who was staggering in one corner as the bell closed the round. In Round
4 action slowed considerably, both exchanging blows in quick bursts with
periods of rest. With the correct punch, Perrella could have brought Lopez
down, but amazingly, Lopez remained standing. Perrella forced Lopez to the
ropes and unleashed a series of blows to Lopez’s body and head, and the referee
halted the fight for a series of unanswered blows. Lopez angrily yelled at the
referee as the fight was stopped, wanting to go on, but the decision was a good
one judging from the blows Lopez had already sustained. Perrella won by TKO
2:08 in the fourth round.

Danny Garcia captured the WBC super
lightweight championship by a 12 round unanimous decision over Mexican legend
Erik Morales by scores of 117-110, 116-112, and 118-109 at the Reliant Arena in
Houston, Texas on Saturday night. The veteran Morales outworked Garcia with
jabs, effective counter punching and spots of precise combination punching.
Garcia’s youth and power appeared to derail Morales’s momentum in the third
with clean and hard hooks but Morales got back to his strategy in round 4. Garcia
and Morales traded the middle rounds by going back and forth between Morales’s jabbing
and counter punching to Garcia’s clean shots. Morales began to take the momentum
back until a Garcia shot dropped Morales. By the end of the twelfth round
Garcia was cut over the bridge of the nose and swelling over his left eye. When
the judges scores were rendered, it was Garcia on the winning end of a seemingly
closure fight then the scores provided but a deserving one none the less. Garcia
was the much busier fighter (throwing 779 to Morales’ 547) and the more accurate
(landing 238 to Morales’ 164). Garcia moves to 23-0 with 14 KO’s while Erik
Morales, pondering imminent retirement post-fight, fell to 52-8 with 36 KO’s.

James Kirkland retained his WBC title (go
ahead and pick one) with a highly controversial disqualification win over the rightfully
so discouraged Carlos Molina. Carlos Molina thoroughly dominated the Kirkland over
the first nine rounds by taking away Kirkland’s offense with hard shots and
combinations. Kirkland had moments in the 4th and 5th rounds but
Molina stayed tight in the pocket to avoid any serious damage. Molina
controlled the action in rounds six through nine throwing combinations and
constantly holding on the inside. Kirkland was urged by trainer Anne Wolfe to let
his hands go at the end of the eighth round but did not follow through until round
10. Kirkland caught Molina at that point and dropped him to create the
possibility of a late round come from behind victory. Molina quickly rose as the
bell sounded to end the round. Molina’s team believed the round was over and
entered the ring to attend to their fighter when referee Jon Schorle declared
the disqualification as a result of interference. Molina was deprived of a
clearly earned victory and if that was not enough insult two judges had Molina up
by scores of 88-83 and 87-84 while Judge Gale Van Hoy had Kirkland winning
86-85. Kirkland goes to 31-1 with 27 knockouts while hard luck Carlos Molina
drops to 19-5-2 with 6 KO’s. Prior to the fight James Kirkland was unable to “produce”
for required urine test. TDLR allowed the bout to go through the fight as long
as he agreed to a post-fight test. It will be interesting to see if a test was administered
after the fight and if so what the results were. We will keep you updated on
the situation.

Jermell Charlo (17-0, 8
knockouts) registered a surprising 3rd round knockout over highly
underated prospect Chris Chatman with a right hand in a scheduled 10-round
junior middleweight fight. Chatman out punched the taller Charler with solid
punching and aggression. Things were going the same in the 3rd when
Chatman rushed into a Charlo right hand. Chatman returned to his feet but
referee Gary Simmons waived the affair off. This was not a premature stoppage
as Chatman did not remember walking to the ring or what had happened 30 minutes
after the fight. It happens sometimes as it is boxing but do not write off Chatman
(10-2-1, 5 KOs) as he has upset 4 undefeated prospects and received a dubious
draw last year on a ESPN2 telecast.

Irish prospect Jamie Kavanagh
triumphed with a blood filled 5th round TKO of Cesar Cisneros to
move to 9-0-1, 4 Kos. Kavanagh dropped Cisneros in the first round and battering
him in the 5th until the fight was called at 2:28 into the round. Kavanagh
was cut near his right eye early on and Cisneros (3-4-2, 1 KO) suffered a gash around
left eye. Kavanagh’s technique made the difference.

In a battle of Texans, Lanard
Lane (Houston), impressively out skilled Milton Ramos (Waco) to gain an 8th
round TKO in the welterweight division. Lane (13-1, 8 KOs) dropped Ramos
(7-3-2) with a right in the 6th and closed the show in the 8th
with a brilliant display of angles and precision punching at 1:34 of the round.
The former Al Haymon charge looks to be a real prospect again as Ramos was a
tough and competent fighter despite taking the fight on 3 days notice.

Jermall Charlo moved to 9-0,
5 Kos over game but inexperienced Shawn Wilson. Charlo had Wilson down with an
uppercut in the 1st round and again twice in the 5th
round with body shots to end the contest. Wilson goes back to of La Vista, Nebbraska
with a record of 5-9 (1) KO.

Daquan Arnett of Florida
started the show with a bang and in the process moving to 2-0 (1 KO) by banging
Fabian Cancino (0-4) with an uppercut to end the fight at 1:51 of the 1st
round round.

The fight was held at the Reliant Arena in Houston, Texas and televised live on HBO. The event was presented by Golden Boy Promotions in a ssociation with DeWalt Tools and Corona. The estimated attendance for the event was 5,500 people.

Former Dallas Olympian Luis Yanez moved to 7-0-1 with an eight-round
split decision over Joseph Rios (10-7-2, 4 KOs) in the pairs third battle to
retain the Texas Flyweight Title. Despite the judges scores of 79-73 (2X), and
a dubious 77-75 tally in favor of Rios, Yanez used speed and precision punching
to erase the 2 prior controversial wins over Rios. With the win hopefully for
Yanez, he can move onto other targets and more activity. I will not bash the 3rd
judge’s score to bad as Rios deserved something after the first two fights in
which almost all observers felt he won convincingly.

Quinton Whitaker (8-9, 5 KOs) upset Salvador Roa (6-1-1,
2 KOs for the Texas Jr. Middleweight Title
with an eight round decision. The scores were tallied at 79-71, 77-73 and
80-71.

Inactive but hard punching Welterweight James Cantu (8-0,
4 KOs) gained a unanimous six round decision over the tough as nails Cory Yett (3-3,
1 KOs)

Steve Hall (4-2, 4 KOs) TKO’d Miguel Pizarro (2-7, 1 KO)
at 2:28 of round one in a battle of someone has to win and move on.

In a battle of Super Flyweight’s Javier Rodriguez moved
to 1-0-1 with a four round decision over debutant Jesse Anguiano

Super Featherweight Rolando Campos went to 5-4, with a 3rd
round TKO over Jorge Flores who drops to 0-4.

The card was promoted by El Paso based Zeferino
Entertainment at La Villita’s Maverick Plaza in San Antonio. Kudos to Zeferino
for their efforts in building boxing around the state in what was a smaller
show for the firm whom has worked with Austin Trout, David Rodriguez, Jennifer
Han and Antonio Escalate.

In a winner moves forward loser may go
away battle Roberto Garcia (31 – 3, 21 KOs) outworked Antwone Smith (21 – 4 –
1, 12 KOs) to keep his career alive over 10 rounds on ESPN2’s Friday Night Fights.
The fight was competitive all the way through in a battle that was fought at
close quarters with both men having their turns. Garcia distanced himself in
the middle rounds with consistent pressure and effective body shots. With the
win Garcia will look to move onto a bigger payday in the near future.

The 8 round co-main event pitted two
fighters whom had lost their last fight and desperately needed the win to keep
their careers alive. James De La Rosa (21-1, 12 KOs) out boxed the power
punching Tyrone Brunson (21 – 2 -1, 20 KOs) to earn a 8 round unanimous
decision. Brunson whom had not fought in 2 years came out swinging wild right
hands making it an easy task for the always moving hometown hero De La Rosa. It
wasn’t smooth sailing the whole way for De La Rosa as one of those wild shots
landed and put him down in the 2nd. After the knockdown De La Rosa
returned to his style of smooth movements and combination punching from all
angles for the remainder of the fight.

The recently retired turned MMA fighter turned boxer
again Rafael Casias (4-4)may want to think about stepping away from fighting
all together after an embarrassing third round KO loss to Sergio Perales whom
moves to 19-1.

In other results:

Felix Piedra moved to
7-0-1with
a first round KO over debutant Rafer Johnson

Rafael Murphy kept
his perfect record intact (4-0) with a 2nd round KO over previously
undefeated Raymond Brown

Mario Amador started
battle of pro debut fighters.

Bahodir Mamadjonov (9-0) used speed,
aggression and effective body punching to close the show in the third round against
Aaron Anderson (2-12) at the Houston Club in downtown Houston. A left-hook to
the body sent Anderson down in the second round and again later in the round
with the same shot. Mamadjonov unleashed a flurry of shots that sent Anderson
down again in the third and forced referee Bobby Gonzales to stop the fight via
a TKO ruling 35 seconds into the frame. The end of the fight saw the fans
treated to a eastern European ballet number from the celebratory Mamadjonov
that had the crowd on its feet.

Light Heavyweight Medzhid Bektemirov
(7-0, 5 KOs) knocked out Matthew Thompson (2-4-1, 1 KO) at 1:23 into the first
round. A right hook had Thompson out on his feet against the ropes when
Bektemirov followed up with two additional shots that forced Thompson to the
floor. He was out cold for at least five minutes before waking up and caused a scary
moment for the fallen Thompson. Thompson was carried out on a stretcher and taken
to the emergency room for further observation. The classy Bektenirov also
performed a celebratory dance number for the audience at the conclusion of his
spectacular knockout win until he realized the potential seriousness of his opponents
injury and attended to him by helping the paramedics lift him onto the gurney.

Former Houston Texans player Marlon
Greenwood scored a 1st round knockout in his his pro debut by
stopping Jonathan Boyce at 2:25 into the opening stanza. Greenwood looks green
but who knows, with the right trainer and development maybe he can become a
nice heavyweight attraction in Houston.

Welterweight Joel Baglio of
Louisiana (6-0, 5 KOs) aggressively broke down Robert Hill (3-17) by knocking
him down three times and forcing Hill’s corner to throw in the towel at 2:38
into Round 4.

Heavyweight
hopeful Fred Allen improved his record to 13-0 6Kos with a 4 round decision win
(40-36 3X) over Andrew Greeley. Allen utilized polished technique and above
average speed to turn away the challenge of the spirited Greeley. Greeley of
the fighting Greeley family of Louisiana dips to 14-38

Welterweight David Thomas made quick work of Maurice Boston by scoring a TKO at
0:48 into Round 1 in a matchup of pro debutants.

Middleweight
Eyubov Bakmtiyar moved to 2-0 by stopping a reluctant Jhaquis Davis (pro debut)
at the 2:57 mark of Round 3. Bakmtiyar also performed a dance number but this
time tried to incorporate his defeated opponent. Davis did not fancy these
actions and a 2nd fight almost broke out 3 minutes after the fight
had ended. Lou Saverese who had to this point already worked the crowd,
directed traffic for EMT staff now had to play negotiator in calming Davis down
and convincing him to leave the ring.

This
event was held at the Houston Club in the heart of downtown Houston and
promoted by Lou Saverese Promotions. The cozy but packed house was treated
graciously to cuisine and beverages and got the opportunity to talk with former
Heavyweight contender Lou Saverese who made himself accessible to all of those
whom wanted to meet him. He appears to have a good thing going by building up
local fighters and reinvigorating the Houston Boxing Scene.

Oscar De la Hoya: “This is a great line up from top to bottom. Molina has been
knocking guys off and Kirkland always comes to fight. We are extremely excited
for this fight. I was there in Cancun when James fought Angulo. What he
showed in that fight by getting knocked down, getting up and knocking out his
opponent was the heart to be a champion. When I told him that he was fighting
Molina he said “line them up”. These are the fighters that we like to work with ”.

Luis DeCubas
(Manager): “Carlos is coming off of a great victory and is very ready to fight”.

Carlos Molina: “I am very excited to be in Texas and am ready
for anything”.

Ann Wolfe: “Molina has come to fight.
No ifs, ands, butts, cherries or nuts, we have come to fight”.

James Kirkland: “I have been training super hard. It is going to be a hell
of a fight and we will give the fans their monies worth”.

Oscar De La Hoya: “It is amazing that a legend like Erik Morales would fight a
young, strong man like Danny Garcia. When we asked him about the fight he said
of course, this is what I do. He has a strong belief in himself and after all
of those great fights he still wants tough fights I was impressed with Danny Garcia’s win over Kendal Holt.
Since that fight Holt came back to win a fight by knock out last week. That
shows you what type of fighter Danny is. He is ready for his HBO debut Erik has had many great fights throughout his career. He
started to shine against Zaragoza, great trilogies with Barrera and Pacquiao
and is a 4-time World Champion. People were saying how could I put him in there
with Maidana and he shocked the world. That is what legends are made of”.

Angel Garcia (Danny Garcia’s dad and trainer): “24 years ago Danny couldn’t breathe when he was born. He has always been a fighter. This is not a hard fight but it is not an easy one. People asked me why we took
this fight in Texas. We would take this fight on the moon. It is Danny’s time.
So what if Morales beat Pacquiao that was 10 years ago. I knew 15 years ago
that Danny would be champion”.

Danny Garcia: “I have a great team. My dad is a great talker so he does the talking
and I do the fighting. It is my time. It is Swift time. I bring power and
explosiveness. My dream comes true Saturday night when the announcer says new
champion of the world Danny “Swift” Garcia”.

Jose “Olivaritos” Morales (Erik Morales’s Trainer/Father): “15 years ago I also had a dream
that my son would also be a champion. Danny is strong and young just like my
son was. It is youth against experience. You will see another defense of Erik’s
title”.

Erik Morales (Fighter): “I have heard a lot of things this week like what are you doing and
that Garcia will be the new champion. I remember when I got a call about the
fight I said sure. I watched the tapes. Do you think I would take the fight to lose?
Do you really think speed and power is better than technique? I am happy to be
in Houston. I wish that I could have fought in January but I am here now. I
have heard it all before. Are people really that stupid? I am going to change
my name from “Terrible” to the “Professor” and give lessons”.
